SPIDERS IN THE CLASSROOM? Who’s afraid of spiders? It seems most people are, whether they admit
it or not, but surely not science teachers and with a little effort perhaps not their students. This is only,
one of the many values of housing spiders in the classroom.
Many events can take place with a spider present. Is a bit of diversion needed to break up the class-
room work routine? A spider can supply it. Would you like some help to explain predator-prey or
consumer level relationships? A spider can help. Does coloration and shape play a part in food-
getting efforts? You know it does and a spider shows it. Instead of the usual homework, . . .how
about seek, capture and bring in a spider? Now you have a place to put it.
The “Spidercage” was designed by an arachnologist for the advanced studies of the activities and
web design of spiders that build “orbshaped” webs. Considerable importance has been assigned to
the variations in web structure that results when the spider involved is forced to respond to environ-
mental changes and physiological modification. N.A.S.A. has used “Spidercages” to study gravity
change effects for over a decade. Hundreds of colleges and universities have conducted drug-effect
studies with the “Spidercage”.
Now, “Spidercage” is available for the classroom. It will function in versatile fashion:

•    A device for classroom research projects (ever think of starting your own research project and
watching how many students join you?).
